Topical Fluorides

Topical Fluorides  prevent tooth decay by 20-40% depending upon the consistency of its use. Important sources of topical fluoride include toothpaste, fluoridated community drinking water, and drinks/food prepared with fluoridated water.

Fluoride Varnish

Nevada Medicaid covers the application of fluoride varnish by physicians and other qualified health professionals to at-risk members ages 20 and younger. This service is valuable to children because fluoride has been shown to be safe, inexpensive and extremely effective in preventing tooth decay.

Healthy Smile Happy Child Fluoride Varnish Manual – This manual includes information on what health professionals licensed in the state of Nevada may apply fluoride varnish, as well as supply lists, instructions for applying the varnish, consent forms and parent/guardian information.

State Medicaid Payment/Reimbursement Table for Caries Prevention Services by Non-Dental Professionals – Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and updated in June 2013, the table provides information on coverage for caries prevention services provided by non-dental professionals in the state of Nevada.

Guideline on Fluoride Therapy – The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry developed this guideline to help practitioners and parents make decisions concerning appropriate use of fluoride as part of the comprehensive oral health care for infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs.

Preventing Tooth Decay – This downloadable fact sheet discusses the importance of daily tooth brushing and the use of fluoride toothpaste. The fact sheet includes graphics depicting the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste to be used by different age groups and how to properly brush.

Nevada Oral Health Matters

Periodontal disease is associated with poor blood sugar control for those living with diabetes.
In the US, more than 42,000 cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed this year.
Nearly half of all US adults have some form of periodontitis.
Tooth decay is an infectious chronic disease, which is also 100% preventable.
Dental disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and poor pregnancy outcomes.
Medicare, the health insurance for most older adults, does not cover basic dental care.
Oral diseases are a neglected epidemic – virtually everyone is affected by them, yet little is done to treat and prevent them.
Left untreated, dental disease can lead to malnourishment, bacterial infections, required emergency surgery and even death.
Pediatric dental disease is five times more common than asthma.
In the US, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental disease, leading to increased educational disparities.
