History

Formation of Oral Health Nevada

Oral health is known as the “neglected epidemic” and as the “silent epidemic” – while almost
everyone can experience oral disease, little attention is paid to control or prevent it.

A Short History…

Oral Health Nevada Inc. was born out of profession-long experiences working with the unserved and underserved. According to its founders, “Once you have seen people suffer, you cannot unsee it.”

With the loss of funding for the state’s Oral Health Program matched with infrequent and inexperienced oral health leadership, as well as inactive advocacy efforts, knowledge and dental history, the founders knew that there needed to be a change in Nevada. Oral health needed to be brought to the forefront for our policy makers, decision makers, other organizations and institutions and most importantly for our residents.

Ms. Syd McKenzie, RDH, and Ms. Christine Garvey, RDH, founded Oral Health Nevada in 2013, and the organizations first Board of Directors was elected shortly thereafter. The organization is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit public charity as determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Since its beginning, Oral Health Nevada Inc. has been working to develop collaborations and partnerships to build on their resources and to strengthen initiatives to improve oral health for all Nevadans.
