New Helpful Resources

Oral Health Nevada has released two new oral health resources. The information provides consumers and caregivers with useful tips for preventing tooth decay. The first resource, Tips for a Healthy Smile, is available in English and Spanish, and covers toothbrushing, the appropriate amount of toothpaste, the impact of nutritional choices and information on preventive measures including fluoride and dental sealants. The second resource,Tips for a Healthy Mouth for Someone with Special Needs, focuses on oral health for individuals with special needs and also includes hints for someone with a physical disability to maintain their own oral hygiene. Nevada Oral Health Matters

In the US, 164 million work hours are lost each year due to dental disease, leading to decreased productivity.
Even individuals with dentures should receive a dental exam at least annually.
In the US, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental disease, leading to increased educational disparities.
Oral diseases are progressive and cumulative and become more complex over time, and they are preventable.
Nearly half of all US adults have some form of periodontitis.

Dental disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and poor pregnancy outcomes.
Tooth decay is an infectious chronic disease, which is also 100% preventable.
Left untreated, dental disease can lead to malnourishment, bacterial infections, required emergency surgery and even death.
Approximately 43% of Americans lack dental insurance.
